Nankai University

Nankai University is a key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education and the alma mater of the beloved Premier Zhou Enlai. The school was founded in 1904 and established in 1919 by modern patriotic educators Yan Xiu and Zhang Boling, who adhered to the concept of saving the country through education. In 1937, the campus was bombed by the Japanese invaders, and the school moved south to form the National Changsha Temporary University with Peking University and Tsinghua University. In 1938, it moved to Kunming and was renamed the National Southwest Associated University. In 1946, it returned to Tianjin and resumed its school and was renamed a national university. Since the founding of New China, the development of the school has always received the cordial care of the Party and the State. Chairman Mao Zedong inscribed the name of the school and visited it in person; Premier Zhou Enlai returned to his alma mater three times for guidance; Comrade Deng Xiaoping met with the mathematics master Chen Xingshen and instructed the establishment of the Nankai Institute of Mathematics; Comrade Jiang Zemin and Comrade Hu Jintao visited Nankai successively. Especially since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, General Secretary Xi Jinping has repeatedly affirmed the development of Nankai, replied to and encouraged related work, and even visited Nankai in person on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the school. After the adjustment of colleges and departments of colleges and universities across the country in 1952, the school became a national key university with equal emphasis on liberal arts and science. Since the reform and opening up, Tianjin Institute of Foreign Trade and China Tourism Management Cadre College have been incorporated successively. With the support of the Ministry of Education and Tianjin, the school has developed into a comprehensive research university that is the focus of the national "211 Project" and "985 Project". In September 2015, after the new campus was completed and put into use, a "one school and three campuses" school-running pattern of Balitai Campus, Jinnan Campus and TEDA Campus was initially formed. In September 2017, the school was selected as a Class A university in the national "Double First-Class" construction. The school covers an area of 4.4312 million square meters, of which the Balitai campus covers an area of 1.216 million square meters, the Jinnan campus covers an area of 2.4589 million square meters, and the TEDA campus covers an area of 67,200 square meters. The total building area of the school is 1.9533 million square meters. The school is one of the comprehensive and research-oriented universities in China with a full range of disciplines. In the long-term process of running schools, it has formed the characteristics of giving equal importance to liberal arts and science, with a broad foundation, and highlighting application and innovation. The university has 27 professional colleges, and the disciplines cover literature, history, philosophy, economics, management, law, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, education, and art. There are 6 national "double first-class" construction disciplines, 6 first-level national key disciplines (covering 35 second-level disciplines), 9 second-level national key disciplines, and 32 first-level Tianjin key disciplines. In the fourth round of national discipline evaluation, 14 disciplines entered the top 10%, of which 5 disciplines entered the top 5%; in the global discipline evaluation system, there are 15 disciplines in the top 1%, and chemistry and materials science are in the top 1‰. The school implements the fundamental task of moral education, attaches importance to the comprehensive development of students' morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics, and labor, deepens and promotes education and teaching reforms, and builds a "public ability" quality education system with Nankai characteristics. The school currently has 32,599 students, including 16,902 undergraduates, 10,966 master's students, and 4,731 doctoral students. There are 96 undergraduate majors; 11 first-level disciplines authorized for master's degrees, 25 master's professional degree authorization points; 31 first-level disciplines authorized for doctoral degrees, 1 second-level doctoral point not covered by the first-level disciplines, and 2 doctoral professional degree authorization points. There are 9 national basic discipline talent training and scientific research bases, 8 basic discipline top student training plan 2.0 bases, 42 national first-class professional construction points, 7 "Strengthening Basics Plan" majors, and more than 10 national experimental teaching, textbook construction, cultural inheritance, innovation and entrepreneurship bases. 31 national first-class undergraduate courses were selected, 7 people won the national teaching master award, 9 national teaching teams were rated, and 46 national teaching achievement awards were won. The school regards the construction of the teaching staff as a basic work, and strives to cultivate a high-quality expert teaching staff with strong political qualities, superb professional skills, and high educational level. The school currently has 2,245 full-time teachers, including 915 doctoral supervisors, 844 master supervisors, 930 professors, and 864 associate professors. There are 13 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 3 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 8 academicians of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World, 28 leading talents of the National "Ten Thousand Talents Program", 22 young top talents, 45 distinguished professors and 27 young scholars of the "Changjiang Scholars Program" of the Ministry of Education, 62 winners of the "National Outstanding Youth Science Fund", 46 winners of the "National Excellent Youth Science Fund", 32 selected for the National "Million Talents Project", 7 innovative research groups of the National Natural Science Foundation, and 10 innovative teams of the Ministry of Education. There are 21 experts with outstanding contributions at the national level, 16 members of the discipline review group of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee, and more than 40 chief scientists of major projects such as the "973 Program", "863 Program", and the National Key R&D Program. The school adheres to the "four orientations", aims at the world's scientific and technological frontiers and major national needs, and vigorously strengthens basic research and original innovation. The university currently has 2 national key laboratories, 1 national engineering research center, 1 national-local joint engineering research center, 3 2011 collaborative innovation centers, and more than 70 provincial and ministerial scientific research bases in natural sciences. It actively promotes the cultivation and construction of basic research centers and cross-disciplinary science centers. From 2007 to 2020, it won 7 "three national awards" as the first unit, among which the project led by Academician Zhou Qilin won the first prize of the National Natural Science Award in 2019. Since 2018, the Nankai Scholars Team has published 7 research papers in Science as the first completing unit. The school has played its advantages as a major center of philosophy and social sciences, actively served the governance of the country in the new era, and promoted the prosperity and development of cultural civilization. The school currently has more than 50 provincial and ministerial humanities and social sciences research bases, innovation centers, laboratories, etc., and the number of selected national philosophy and social science achievement libraries ranks among the top universities in the country. A number of excellent think tanks have become "think tanks" and "talent pools" for national ministries and local governments. The school fully connects with national and regional development strategies, actively integrates into the main battlefield of economic and social development, and has established close cooperative relations with a number of universities, enterprises, research institutes, and government departments. Based on the "two overall situations", the school continues to promote high-level opening up to the outside world and continuously expand the school's international reputation and influence. It has established cooperative relations with more than 330 internationally renowned universities and academic institutions, and carried out high-level exchanges and cooperation in teacher-student exchanges, joint training, and collaborative scientific research.
